If you haven't read our Guide to D'Clutter your Garage you can Download The Garage Guide Here.
It will give you a few things to think before you begin your garage organization project.
Before you do get into the Garage Installation
underway take at look at our checklist and some visual inspiration.
1. Make The Plan!
Things to consider while your making a plan:
- What's the weather going to be like?
This seems almost like common sense, but if you forget to check the weather, you may end up with a lot of damaged goods.
- What do you plan on installing?
Epoxy garage flooring will take a while to install, but something like garage cabinets may only take an hour or two. So think about what it is you're going to install and how long it will take.
- What does your spouse think about storage placement?
You will gain new perspectives and avoid future conflict.
- Are there some items that need special attention?
Is there a couch that you are going to need help moving? Is there a an item like a computer that has special disposal rules that apply.
2. Clear Out The Clutter!
Things to consider while clearing out the clutter :
- Do an initial clear out.
Get rid of these easiest stuff that, truthfully, should have been thrown away along time ago. This shouldn't take much thought.
- Do an open garage sale.
You can make a few extra bucks. You can gauge the value of items that you are on the fence about keeping. You can get new perspectives on the project itself.
- Section off the driveway with chalk.
This is great preparation for if you are enlisting the help of your kids and friends. Just outline sections for things such as tools and holiday items so that your kids don't nag you about where things go.
- Stick to your timeframe!
In the event you hired a garage organization company, you don't want to keep them waiting or reschedule to another a day. Have discipline.
3. Install Organizers
Things to consider while installing organizers:
- Wall Space.
Slat wall is a great way to get your tools organized. If you are planning on using your garage for multiple purposes, it might be best to invest in garage cabinets.
- Future Car Space.
If you plan on buying another car for your kids or yourself, you may want to consider this when installing new items.
- Functionality.
If you want to create some gym space, you will have to think about things like air conditioning, and refrigeration.
4. Reorganize
Things to consider while reorganizing your garage:
- Starting from the back, and move forward.
Put holiday stuff and large storage items in the back, and make sure that you really are tight fitting this space because these items should only be rarely moved.
- What to do if you have future renovation plans.
If you have to separate your renovation into phases, consider that when placing heavy items or items that may cause damage when you go back to renovate.
Now Channel your inner champion, sets some goals for your garage, and get it started.
