When you look at your children’s bedroom, is it full of clutter and chaos? If so, you’re not alone and there is a viable solution. A major contributing factor to disorganization is the lack of organizers. Imagine a closet without any hanging rods or shelves - all of your clothes will be on the floor.
The other factor is the types of organizers which affects the intuitiveness of organization. For example, if you have only shelves, only hanging rods, or only drawers, how effective would your organization be? You may have a difficult time (at least at first) to know where each item belongs.
However, if you have tailored organizers for different categories of items, it will be more obvious and “intuitive” to stay organized. What we’re going to cover in this article is what closet organizers to include in your kid’s closets so that organization becomes hassle-free.
6 Kid’s Closet Tips to Help Kids Tame the Clutter
At Closet Gallery servicing around the Sacramento area, we specialize in designing fully adjustable kids’ closets that are not only intuitively functional, but one that grows with your child. Here are the organizers that can be incorporated into a custom closet.
Double or Triple Hanging Rods
Most traditional closets only have 1 hanging rod that spans the entire width of the closet. This is ineffective as it monopolizes the storage space and difficult to reach by kids. By having double or even triple hanging rods, you can put the frequently used hanging clothing items towards the bottom and use a kids high-rise step ladder (with hand rails for safety) to reach the top hanging rod for less frequently used items. This design allows more space for other useful organizers.
Cubbies with bins and baskets
While growing up, kids will quickly accumulate a large collection of all types of toys and accessories. Display shelves are no longer effective and only adds to the cluttered feel of the room. In this case, clear, see-through bins or baskets with labels can be a great way to keep all of those items organized. You can encourage your children to quickly put all the toys away to establish a good habit!
Drawers with Labels
Drawers can have a variety of uses depending on the types of items your kids have and other organizers you have in place. Some common items to store are toys, pajamas, casual/in-home shirts and shorts, etc. The downside to having too many drawers is that your kid has to remember what drawer is used to store what items.
The more hassle you give organization… that’s right, the more disorganization occurs. If it’s necessary to have many drawers, label them. However if possible, use other closet organizers first since they are the most effective.
Hooks to Hang Frequently Used Items
When there are frequently used items such as coats, jackets and scarves, it may be discouraging to always have to hang it back up inside the closet. Remember, the more of a hassle we make organization, the less likely for organization to happen. In this case, hanging hooks are great solutions! Your kid comes in the room and hangs up the items right away - although you may have to remind them everyday for the first couple of weeks ;)
Shoe Racks
If your child’s shoe collection is expanding whether it’s due to extra-curricular activities such as sports, or if they just have a fashion collection, a shoe rack will play an important role in keeping floors uncluttered. By keeping all the shoes together and OFF the floor, the bedroom will feel roomier, shoes avoid piling on top of each other, and they will be easy to find in a glance.
Short and Tall Cabinets / Shelves
There are many ways to use closet cabinets. The shorter cabinets can be used to store things like towels, hats, clothes and even shoes. Taller cabinets can be used to showcase trophies and other memorabilia. Although organization is important, it’s wise to not fall into the organization “sergeant” role, with zero room for self-expression and creativity. The balance is to allow a designated amount of space in the closet just for this purpose - something they can see every morning.
